INFORMATION MAPS

Introduction

Definition of Information Maps:     An information map is a set of blocks (called information blocks) about a limited topic.
Each information map is arranged hierarchically by scope or by sequence.

Parts of Information Maps:

Each information map has the following parts or blocks: A name and a number.
Name: The Map’s name may be a descriptive word, phrase or sentence regarding the subject matter of map.

Number:     The map’s number designates where the map logically belongs within the document or data base.

Information Blocks:
Information blocks are the component parts of Information Maps.  Blocks are labeled chunks of text or illustrations.  Each information block has a label (for example: Definition, Example, Diagram).
Information Maps Characteristics:
Information Maps are unique:  Each map has a unique identifier (e.g.:  name and number)
Information Maps are comprehensive:  Each map covers all of the information about limited topic.
Two basic types of information maps:

New content

Reinforced information (e.g., summaries)
Various functional types of information maps are concept maps, structure maps, process maps, procedure maps, classification maps, among others presented below.

Maps of Concepts
A concept map may be a:
technical term
generalization sentence
property sentence
rule sentence
relationship sentence

Many types of information blocks are associated with Concept Maps.

Maps of Structures
A structure is a physical thing, or something which can be divided into parts which have boundaries.
Information Blocks associated with structures:
name of structure
meaning
function
parts and subparts

Maps of Processes
A process is some structure changing through time.
To describe a process involves writing about what happens during successive stages of time.
Information Blocks Associated with processes

Maps of Procedures
Description:
A Procedure Map consists of a set of steps to be performed to obtain some specified outcome, that is, a set of “how to’s.”
Definition:  A procedure is a structured process involving specific steps.
Representation:
flow charts
lists of steps
worksheets
checklists
diagnostic or troubleshooting guides
Decision Table /DLT—Decision Logic Table
Definition of Decision Logic Table:
Method of arranging “if‑then” relationships in tabular format.  One part describes circumstances or conditions that exists.  The other side describes actions to be taken for each set of circumstances.
Example of DLT Table Headings:
Rule#/Conditions
(“if”)Condition/(“then”)Actions

Procedure Table
Definition:
Sequence of steps needed to complete a specified operation
Parts:
Step number
Procedure

PERT chart
Definition:   a kind of sequence network which shows event sequences (represented by boxes) and event dependencies (represented by arrows)

          Rules:        No cycles are permitted
WHIF chart

Definition

A chart which presents a causal sequence in reverse order
Stage Table
State Table

Types of procedures
General procedures
Specific procedures
Linear procedures
Definition
sequentially performed procedures

Decision procedures

Definition of decision procedures

Classification Maps
Description of Classification Maps:
Sorting of things by concepts into categories by the use of one more criteria (sorting factors)
Information Blocks associated with Classification Maps:

Information Blocks
Definition of Information Block:  Smallest part of an information mapping analysis
Information Blocks consist of:

Label—For example:  Definition

Body—The sentences, diagrams, illustrations that are part of subject
Relationships—Connections to other blocks, maps

Name Block Information Block

Definition:            Tells subject of map
Rules for  Name Block Information Block:
